Monday, March 9 - Friday, March 13

Friday
We read the short story "Love" today. During reading, I asked that everyone find examples of the children's love/devotion to Miss Brown.  After a second reading we identified all the foeshadowing that hinted at Miss Brown's death. I categorized these under three headings: flowers, funeral vocabulary and other language. I was very impressed at all the examples that the class found AND how people listened and offered their own examples. At the very end, I asked for a simile, metaphor, hyperbole, or some line of poetry about your favourite socks. Next week we will look at the ode in detail and try writing and ode to an ordinary thing.
Thursday
At the beginning of class we did the Edit quiz related to the descriptive paragraphs. Everyone did very well - good job! Don't forget that tomorrow the good copy of one of your descriptions of an elementary classmate is due. Please remember the drafts and the criteria come in as well. For the remainder of the class we wrapped-up the story The Metaphor by listing final thoughts about Ms. Hancock and Charlotte's mother. I was impressed by your analysis of these two characters, and by your understanding of the story given that I was away when you read it. At the end of the class we did a five minute write about a memory of an influential school teacher. I asked for three powerful words first and then that the first sentence should begin with one of those words, while the other words would be used somewhere further on in the writing. We will begin a new short story tomorrow. We are moving towards writing an ode, but don't panic, it doesn't have to be about a teacher!
Wednesday
Due to PLC schedule today, we didn't end up doing the quiz, so that will take place tomorrow. On spur of the moment, I picked a short film to view and, using the short story terms and definitions, we did a short story "Smack Down" competition. Congrats to team PM for their decisive win today!

Tuesday

I returned the draft paragraphs about your elementary classmates. They were entertaining and well crafted, and met the criteria effectively. I noticed a significant improvement in the quality of writing compared to the narrative pieces based on a prompt. Your good copy of one of the character sketches is due, with the draft and criteria sheet, on Friday. A reminder, those who did not turn in a draft have lost the opportunity for feedback. On Friday, if you have not yet submitted your narrative, you can turn it in with the (on time) character sketch. I also gave out the Edit sheet based on errors found in the characters sketches. There will be a little quiz on these errors tomorrow.

Monday

Here are the notes that I left for the TOC:

1.     Silent read
2.     Read the story The Metaphor (they have book). During reading do T-chart to track descriptions of Miss Hancock and the narrator’s mother.

3.     After reading: collect metaphors used in the story.
