Monday, April 13 - Friday, April 17

Friday
After silent reading, we completed a peer and self-assessment of the novel autographs to ensure they met the criteria before handing them in. Next we looked at a few more examples of the types of presentations that could be done for the micro-fiction presentations that are due Tuesday, May 28. At the end of the class, we looked at the idea of theme in texts and then set about coming up with theme statements for the short story Holding Harley.

Thursday
Today we completed reading and  finished our "gambling on predictions" for the short story "Holding Harley."

Wednesday
After silent reading, we played a team game to practice the some of the poetry terms and devices for the Provincial Exam. Afterwards there was a little bit of time to work on the good copy of the ode or the novel autograph.

Tuesday

We started today's class with a bunch of "house cleaning" items. There will be a quiz on poetry terms and devices next Tuesday, so practice the flashcards in the links section of this blog. The micro-fiction presentation was discussed and a criteria sheet distributed. You must hand-in 4 micro-stories (a 10 word story, a drabble, a twister/twitter story, and a fiction55. You must create a presentation for 2 of the stories and it is due Monday, April 27th.
Next, we began a short story called "Holding Harley." We are working towards writing a short expository piece about two short stories. This will be the lead in to a longer essay next term.

Monday

Welcome back! Term 3 is almost finished. Before the break, I gave each student a progress report. This week is the time to get the novel autographs done. As this is the last assessment piece for the report card, it will be the last chance before the report card to hand-in late assignments.
I returned the draft copies of the odes today. Well done everyone! You are off to a great start. I put some reminders on the board for things to think about when doing the good copy (due Friday, April 20). Remember to include careful word choices that are relevant to your subject; use more figurative language (try and allusion?; add sound devices (onomatopoeia anyone); make sure you have some sort of organized presentation of your praise, not just a list of attributes.
Tomorrow we will begin something new!
