As well tomorrow you have a quiz on a select few terms and devices. Today we picked up copies of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night. Tomorrow you will be doing some background readings on Autism and Aspergers. During reading, remember the following task as you read:
Christopher's autism plays a major role in his interpretation of the events around him or the actions of others.
Be sure to include BOTH kinds of scenarios:
- A list of scenes/events in the novel in which miscommunication that leads to confusion or to Christopher taking the wrong path (autism as a hindrance)
- An alternative way of thinking/application of logic that enables him to see what others do not (autism as an asset)
Your final copy of this during reading activity should be done as a chart or typed/table in Word (for example) with the following headings:
scene/event his interpretation result autism as hindrance or asset
We went over two more synthesis examples today and identified what made them strong pieces of writing.Tomorrow we will organize the criteria strips and then I will type up a criteria sheet to guide you when writing your synthesis piece. Your question will be : Which character do you feel more sympathetic towards Darcy or " Danny"? BOTH pieces must be discussed.
Tuesday
No Hink Pinks today? We spent most of the class going through the micro-fictions. I asked you to identify the misleading situation and the real situation in your pieces; symbols, foreshadowing, metaphors, imagery; twist; and word choice. At the end of the class I asked you to make an "H" chart and walk around the room collecting ideas from the wall charts made yesterday. You will need this information in the upcoming synthesis writing piece you will be doing.
Monday
After silent reading we spent some time discussing the Provincial Exam. Most people made the decision today about whether to write the paper exam or the e-exam. At this point about two-thirds of the class has elected to write the e-exam. It is completely a matter of personal choice. Remember for the e-exam that the spell-check and grammar-check are turned off. Related to the exam, we looked at a sample exam synthesis question. This is the type of writing we are moving into using the two stories Holding Harley and Who I am Not. I mentioned that in any exam question you should look for the verb/action you are being asked to do: assess, compare/contrast, discuss, etc. As well, you must look for the key words in the question to determine what to discuss, or compare, or assess. At the end of the class I read a student sample answer that received a "6" (top mark) on the synthesis section of the exam. We will carry-on with some other samples tomorrow in order to develop the criteria for this type of writing.
